Description Clinical Coordinator - GI Lab Job code: 200300 POSITION SUMMARY : The GI Lab Clinical Coordinator is in charge of activities of the unit assuring responsibility and accountability of Associates in scheduling, staffing and assignments. The Clinical Coordinator will coordinate the level of care with identified patient needs and provide clinical support to staff. The Clinical Coordinator will assist with keeping the channels of communication open between other departments. The Clinical Coordinator will assist with technical nursing care and interventions as required. Per the Departments Scope of Practice, this position requires providing quality care in an efficient and safe manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional/developmental age of the individuals served. (infant-older adults). This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital. It is expected that the Coordinator demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. Goals Completes quarterly goals Delivering the Mission Performs duties as defined in this job description and demonstrates mastery of role MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES : 1. ASSESSMENT OF NURSING CARE BASED ON NURSING ASSESSMENT, THE GI LAB SUPERVISOR WILL ASSIGN PATIENT CARE TO MEET INDIVIDUAL PATIENT NEEDS. Assesses patient on admission in a timely manner. Uses clinical assessment skills accurately, assessing each patient's psychological, psychosocial, safety and educational needs. Notifies physician of any critical findings or changes following admission. 3. THE GI LAB SUPERVISOR WILL COMMUNICATE WITH THE MEDICAL STAFF AND ANCILLARY DEPARTMENTS TO PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE AND COORDINATED PATIENT CARE SERVICES. Communicates patient needs to appropriate person and makes referrals to other departments when indicated. Notifies attending physician/surgeon and/or anesthesia provider of changes in patient's condition in a timely and appropriate manner. Interrelates with ancillary departments in a positive manner. Communicates major changes in level of care to the supervisor and/or the designated personnel. Documents patient response to all procedures in the nursing records. Thoroughly completes the nursing record in a prompt and accurate manner. Acts as an advocate in providing safe delivery of care at all times. Shows knowledge of chain of command in follow up of concerns. 4. HE GI LAB SUPERVISOR SHALL ADMINISTER MEDICATIONS AS PRESCRIBED BY THE PHYSICIAN. Is able to knowledgeably /safely provide all medications as ordered. Periodically updates medication knowledge. Accurately documents medication administration including time, date, route, response, and signature in the nursing record. Documents allergies at the time of admission. Documents all allergic reactions to medications, blood, adhesives, etc. Initiates the teaching of patient, relating to medication being received. 5. THE PATIENT'S RIGHTS TO CONFIDENTIALITY WILL BE MAINTAINED BY ALL NURSING PERSONNEL. Handles all patient communication and documentation in a confidential manner. Does not release patient information/records without following hospital policy. 6. DEMONSTRATES THE ABILITY TO ACCURATELY ASSESS AND DOCUMENT PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIES. Uses computer system(s) appropriately. Documents in the medical record according to policy and procedures. Complies with incident reporting. 7. OBTAINS KNOWLEDGE OF AND DEMONSTRATES COMPLIANCE WITH INFECTION CONTROL POLICY AND PROCEDURES. Practices universal precautions in all patient care. Appropriately handles and disposes of sharps and biological matter. 8. PROVIDES FOR THE EDUCATION/TRAINING OF THE PATIENT/FAMILY Identifies and documents patient/family educational needs upon initial assessment and thereafter. Identifies barriers to learning. Provides teaching based on identified needs. Evaluates the effectiveness of instruction provided. Assessment and teaching incorporates cultural and ethnic actors. Assessment and teaching incorporates functional needs. 9. DEMONSTRATES KNOWLEDGE OF UNIT SPECIFIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES AND THE ABILITY TO SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY USE UNIT SPECIFIC PATIENT CARE EQUIPMENT IN THE DELIVERY OF QUALITY PATIENT CARE. Completed Unit Specific Annual Competency Checklist. Obtains necessary training prior to initial equipment use. Assures equipment is in operating order prior to use. Differentiates between patient complications and equipment malfunction. Uses medical equipment in accordance with manufacturer's operating guidelines. 10. DEMONSTRATES KNOWLEDGE OF DOCUMENTATION AND RECORD COMPLETION. Accurate and timely completion of nursing records. Accurate and timely completion of charges. Accurate and timely completion of implant documentation. Accurate and proper handling of specimens. Proper handling of chain of evidence. Accurate and proper handling of all lab work. 11. DEMONSTRATES KNOWLEDGE OF PATIENT DISCHARGE. Accurately and completely reports patient information on surgical/GI procedure, patient condition, pertinent medical history and/or outstanding circumstances to PACU/Day Surgery/ICU receiving personnel. 12. DIRECT THE ACTIVITIES OF UNIT PERSONNEL TO ACHIEVE UNIT OBJECTIVES FOR QUALITY RESULTS, CUSTOMER/PATIENT SATISFACTION, COST-EFFECTIVENESS AND COMPLIANCE WITH FISCAL BUDGET. Ensure continuity of quality patient care by planning evening staff assignments, working with other coordinators, evaluating outcomes, providing staff feedback and developing improvement strategies. Monitor labor costs, ensuring overtime is limited as much as possible. Ensure issues or information needing to be passed on and/or followed up is addressed in a timely manner. 13. DEMONSTRATE PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE AND LEADERSHIP BY: Functioning to the maximum of personal ability and competence Act as a role model with standards of practice, orienting new personnel as needed Responding to change in the workplace in a flexible, collaborative manner Initiate plans to solve intra and inter-department level problems and to improve patient care 14. SERVE AS A CLINICAL EXPERT RESOURCE TO MEMBERS OF THE HEALTH CARE TEAM Maintains up-to-date knowledge of clinical and technological advances Routinely shares knowledge of changes with other members of the patient care team 15. ASSESS THE LEARNING NEEDS AND SKILL COMPETENCIES OF TEAM MEMBERS Assist with coordination and evaluation of new staff Prepare and present annual performance evaluations to assigned staff members 16. ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN INTRA- AND INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH ALL MEMBERS OF THE HEALTH CARE TEAM Members of the health care team to include: Day Surgery, Surgery, PACU, and postoperative patient care areas Serve as the primary liaison with physicians, office staff, SPD, purchasing and vendors related to the care of the patient Serve as a resource for the development of patient and family education Facilitate the resolution of interpersonal conflicts to ensure continued high quality patient care 17. MAINTAINS VIGILANCE IN THE PERIOPERATIVE SETTING, AND EXEMPLIFY PRINCIPLES OF RISK MANAGEMENT, SAFETY AND INFECTION CONTROL. Report non-compliance to accepted standards of care and/or practice to the Manager or Infection Control Officer Intervene directly in situations which are immediately harmful to the patient and/or other employees 18. ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT PROCESS Assist with the collection of quality management data Participate in performance improvement efforts in the department and/or organization-wide Identify PI opportunities within the department Collaborate in developing and implementing strategies for improvement 19. MAINTAIN THE IMAGE OF THE FACILITY AND WORK AREAS AS A SAFE, CLEAN, EFFICIENT, CARING ORGANIZATION Establish expectations for cleanliness and organization of supplies and equipment Ensure all members of the team are knowledgeable of, and accountable for expectations Requirements A.
