Job Description:

As a Psychiatrist, you will provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to veterans in need of psychiatric services. Duties include documenting observations, assessments, and changes in patient's condition; collaborating with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes; providing a full range of psychiatric care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavior problems; and accountable for meeting and maintaining the qualification standards of assigned specialty. Our facility is seeking individuals who possess good organizational skills which enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team.

The Outpatient Psychiatrist will provide patient care to approximately 12-20 outpatients daily, including diagnosis, care, and treatment, as well as consultations to other services when requested. Responsible for all facets of an acute outpatient care. Will assist in completing quality management reviews. Must be computer literate with computer skills to access and input electronic medical documentation. Responsible for the successful achievement of applicable Performance Measure and Monitors for his/her areas of responsibility.

Two of the vacancies are for the Acute Psychiatric Unit where the Psychiatrist will operate as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

Work Schedule: Full-time. Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required. First-Year Residency (Internship) - Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was competed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are: Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed OR Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The Physician must maintain a current registration to continue employment with the VA Educational requirements.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.


    Required Experience: Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.Must pass pre-employment examination.

    Designated and/or Random Drug Testing required.

    Background and/or Security Investigation required.

    Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

    Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

    Provide month year for start and end dates on work experience.

    Indicate full-time or part-time on work experience.

    Physical Requirements: All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
