Description
Summary:
Medical Technologist/Microbiologist will perform various medical
laboratory procedures within the Microbiology Department in the
laboratory for use in diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of
disease. Assist in the daily operations and maintenance of the
department and perform analysis requiring a complex network of
steps and variables. The Medical Technologist/Microbiologist will
confirm and verify results through an in-depth professional
knowledge of techniques, principles and instruments. Daily
responsibilities include:
Receives and processes specimens;
Examines routine cultures, subcultures and smears;
Performs antibiotic susceptibility and identification tests;
Processes acid fast specimens for send-outs and stains;
Oxford website accessed and TSPOT resulted in timely manner;
Performs and read gram stains, and AFB stains;
Records results appropriately in LIS;
Notification of critical results, documentation in LIS.
The Medical Technologist//Microbiologist will also have the
following responsibilities:
Prepares and examines wet mounts for ova, cysts and parasite
examination. Performs test kits, including Wet Preps, GCA/CAO EIA
Parasite Screen KIT, WBC (stool) KIT, ROTAVIRUS KIT, AND
CRYPTOCOCCAL ANTIGEN KIT.
Examines and interprets fungus cultures - Fungus cultures examined
weekly, identify, yeast, report correctly; Subculture isolates for
Reference Lab; Prepare and examine KOH preps and Lacto Phenol
Cotton Blue stain.
Performs and records Quality Control (QC) procedures - Performs QC
for all tests (media, kits, stains, reagents, Vitek2, Infinity)
appropriately; Maintain pure culture of all control organisms in a
manner that assures ready-t-use samples; Record QC results on
correct forms or in LIS; Resolve discrepancies concerning QC and
document results appropriately.
Maintains departmental record keeping and clerical functions -
Maintain department records, review and reconcile logs, result
patient tests in a timely and accurate manner. Communicates supply
needs. Check in supplies and stock upon receipt, date and store
supplies according to manufacturer's guidelines.
Operates the LIS, Vitek 2 XL, BacTAlert blood culture instrument,
and Previ Color Gram stainer - Utilize knowledge of maintenance
schedule and troubleshooting. Document appropriately in LIS or on
hardcopies.
Performs Microbiology proficiency surveys - Responsible for timely
proficiency testing, assure that all tests are complete and that
forms are signed. Be informed as to reporting regulations. Keep all
raw data testing records in the Department.
Operates the GeneXpert Infinity - Has knowledge and perform
necessary scheduled maintenance functions and troubleshooting
involved in PCR testing. Document appropriately. Perform PCR test
accurately.
Organisms and specimens packaged and shipped to reference labs -
Ensures forms are correctly filled out; Specimen are packaged
according to category as determined by IATA and DOT; Transporting
dangerous goods re-certification performed every 2 years.
Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in clinical or medical laboratory science,
medical technology or biological science or foreign equivalent.
Technologist level or national recognized certification (such as
ASCP, NCA, AMT, AAB) as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).
Current Louisiana Board of Medical Examiners CLS certification.
